Seasonal Produce Guide

Though often overlooked, nutrition is an extremely important part of the healing process. During the healing process, the body is busy adding new tissue, replacing fluids and fighting infection, so it needs increased amounts of water, calories, protein and vitamins.

“Because wound care is essential to the health and well-being of patients with wounds, we must provide patients with the tools they need for optimized healing,” said Sally Farquhar, APRN, KCHS Wound Care Clinic Director. “Nutritional assessments are an important part of what we do.”

After the assessment, the KCHS Wound Care team works in conjunction with a patient’s primary care provider to recommend dietary changes to promote healing.

To kickstart their wound healing, we that patients:

  • Eat balanced meals that include fruit and vegetables.
  • Include a source of protein in each meal or snack.
  • Prioritize “healthy” fats, like olive oil and avocados.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, especially those that are caffeine and sugar free.
