Thyroid Awareness Month: The Small Gland with a Big Job

At KCHS, we are committed to educating our community about health issues that affect many people, including conditions that often go unnoticed. January is Thyroid Awareness Month, a time to shine a spotlight on the small but mighty thyroid gland and its vital role in keeping our bodies functioning properly.

What Is the Thyroid, and What Does It Do?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. Though small, it produces hormones that regulate essential functions such as:

  • Metabolism (how your body uses energy)
  • Heart rate
  • Body temperature
  • Muscle strength
  • Mood and brain function

When the thyroid isn’t working as it should, it can lead to thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), or even thyroid nodules and cancer.

Thyroid Disorders Are Common but Often Overlooked

According to the American Thyroid Association, 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, but as many as 60% are unaware of their condition. Women are particularly at risk, as they are five to eight times more likely to develop thyroid problems than men.

Symptoms to Watch For

Because the thyroid affects so many systems in the body, symptoms of thyroid disorders can vary widely. Some common signs include:

Hypothyroidism:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Hair thinning
  • Depression or forgetfulness

Hyperthyroidism:

  • Nervousness or irritability
  • Weight loss despite normal eating habits
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Sweating or heat intolerance
  • Tremors

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult your healthcare provider.

How Is Thyroid Health Diagnosed?

A simple blood test can measure your thyroid hormone levels to determine if your thyroid is functioning properly. In some cases, imaging tests like an ultrasound may also be used to evaluate thyroid structure.
