4 Essentials for a Strong Start to the School Year

Happy kids in classroom

As summer winds down and the school year approaches, families everywhere are shifting back into routine. At KCHS, we know that a healthy start can set the tone for a successful school year—both inside and outside the classroom.

Here are four simple ways to support your child’s health and well-being this back-to-school season:

1. Prioritize Sleep

Late summer nights can make early mornings tough. But sleep plays a crucial role in learning, focus, mood, and overall health.

Tips to help reset routines:

  • Start moving bedtime earlier by 15–30 minutes each night.
  • Power down electronics at least 30 minutes before bed.
  • Keep wake-up times consistent—even on weekends.

Why it matters: Children and teens who get adequate sleep perform better in school, have stronger immune systems, and are better equipped to manage stress.

2. Keep Germs at Bay

With kids returning to classrooms, shared spaces, and busy hallways, it’s the perfect time to reinforce good hygiene habits.

Back-to-school hygiene checklist:

  • Encourage handwashing before meals, after recess, and after using the restroom.
  • Teach kids to cover coughs and sneezes with their elbow—not their hands.
  • Pack hand sanitizer and tissues in backpacks.
  • Clean lunchboxes and water bottles regularly.

Why it matters: Simple habits like handwashing can prevent colds, flu, and other illnesses—keeping students healthy and in class.

3. Support Mental Health

A new school year can bring excitement, but also anxiety or uncertainty—especially for students adjusting to a new grade, school, or routine.

How to support emotional well-being:

  • Talk openly about how your child is feeling.
  • Create calm, consistent routines at home.
  • Limit screen time and encourage physical activity.
  • Watch for signs of stress like headaches, sleep changes, or withdrawal.

Why it matters: Mental health is just as important as physical health. Creating a safe, supportive environment helps kids build resilience and thrive academically and socially.

4. Don’t Skip Health Checks

Back-to-school is a great time to catch up on any checkups or screenings your child may need.

What to schedule:

  • Annual wellness exams
  • Sports or school physicals
  • Vaccinations and immunizations
  • Vision and dental checkups

Why it matters: Preventive care helps identify and address potential issues early—supporting your child’s learning, development, and long-term health.
