People with cardiac illness need medical treatment, education, exercise, and a monitored rehabilitation program. The KCHS Cardiac Rehabilitation department offers Phase II and Phase III of cardiac care.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phases

Phase I is for inpatients still in the hospital after their heart event, and is the very first step in teaching these patients and helping them recover. This is typically offered at the facility where the individual is an inpatient.

Phase II is offered after patient discharge from the hospital and is a program of monitored, progressive aerobic exercise. Anyone who has had a heart attack, angina, bypass surgery, stent, heart transplant, congestive heart failure, angioplasty, or an individual with LVAD is eligible for this program.

Sessions are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday and are conducted under the guidance of Julie Schmidt, RN, an ACLS certified coronary care nurse. One of our KCHS physicians oversees the program and is available in the event problems arise.

For those who wish to continue beyond Phase II, KCHS offers Phase III, a maintenance program, for graduates of Phase II as well as other appropriate candidates.

Cardiac Rehabilitation patients are referred by their physician (which does not have to be a KCHS physician) after specific cardiac events. Patients may be eligible for the Cardiac Rehab Program depending on their insurance. Most insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid cover the cost of the Cardiac Rehab sessions.
