Protect Your Heart: Calcium Score Screening Heart CT Scans Now Available at KCHS

Kearney County Health Services (KCHS) is excited to introduce Calcium Score Screening Heart CT Scans, now available as a cash-pay service for just $115. This simple, noninvasive test provides valuable insight into your heart health and helps identify your risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) before symptoms arise.

What is a Calcium Score Screening Exam?

This test utilizes a multi-slice CT scanner to measure the amount of calcium (plaque buildup) in the arteries of your heart. The presence of calcium is an early sign of CAD, which can increase your risk of a heart attack. By detecting plaque buildup early, you and your healthcare provider can take preventative measures to protect your heart health.

Who Should Get a Calcium Score Screening Test?

This exam is recommended for individuals aged 40-75 who have an increased risk of heart disease but do not currently show symptoms. You may benefit from this screening if you:

✅ Have a family history of heart disease
✅ Are a current or former smoker
✅ Have a history of high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure
✅ Lead a sedentary lifestyle or have a BMI over 25
✅ Are under 40 years old but have a strong family history of high cholesterol

Who Should NOT Get This Exam?

This screening is not recommended if you:
❌ Have already been diagnosed with CAD or have undergone treatment for it
❌ Have active symptoms of CAD (e.g., chest pain, shortness of breath)
❌ Have no risk factors for heart disease
❌ Are pregnant

What to Expect During the Exam

  • The scan takes only 15-20 minutes and requires no IV contrast.

  • You will change into a hospital gown and lie on the scanning table.

  • Electrode patches will be placed on your chest to monitor heart activity.

  • The scanner will capture images of your heart while you briefly hold your breath.

  • After the scan, a radiologist will analyze the images, and results will be sent to your healthcare provider.

Understanding Your Results

Your calcium score will fall within a specific range:
🟢 0 – No visible calcium (low risk of CAD)
🟡 1-100 – Mild evidence of CAD
🟠 100-400 – Moderate evidence of CAD
🔴 400+ – Strong evidence of CAD, further evaluation may be needed

While this test is an excellent predictive tool, it is not a definitive test for heart attacks. Always discuss your results with a qualified healthcare provider to determine the best next steps for your heart health.
