Gentle Exercises for Cold Days: Staying active during the winter months is important for both physical and mental health, especially for older adults. Shorter days and colder temperatures can lead to decreased activity levels, which may impact your well-being and contribute to feelings of isolation or the “winter blues.” Regular movement helps keep your body strong and flexible while boosting your mood and reducing stress.

The good news? You don’t need a gym or perfect weather to stay active—gentle exercises at home can make a big difference.

SIMPLE AT-HOME ACTIVITIES
Chair Stretches: Sit in a sturdy chair and gently stretch your arms, legs, and back. This improves flexibility and reduces stiffness, especially in colder weather.
Balance Exercises: Practice standing on one leg while holding onto a countertop or chair for support. This strengthens core muscles and helps prevent falls.
Light Strength Training: Use household items like canned goods or water bottles as weights to gently strengthen your arms and shoulders.
Seated Marching: Sit upright in a chair and lift your knees one at a time as if marching. This simple movement improves circulation and strengthens your lower body.

BOOST YOUR MENTAL WELLNESS
Even a few minutes of movement can lift your spirits and provide a sense of accomplishment. Pair your exercise with upbeat music or a favorite TV show to make it enjoyable. Staying active is a great way to care for both your body and mind this winter. Stay warm, stay moving, and stay well!
